Sharks deal Craig Rivet to Sabres for draft picks
The Associated Press
The San Jose Sharks traded veteran defenseman Craig Rivet to the Buffalo Sabres on Friday for two second-round draft choices.
The Sharks also gave up a seventh-round pick in 2010 along with Rivet, the longtime Montreal defenseman who joined the Sharks in a trade late in the 2006-07 season. San Jose gets a second-round draft choice in each of the last two drafts.
Rivet signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the Sharks last summer. He had five goals and 35 points as a dependable performer on San Jose's defense last season.
The Sharks added two top NHL defensemen in two days before Rivet's departure, signing Rob Blake to a one-year free-agent deal Thursday before acquiring Dan Boyle from Tampa Bay in a four-player trade earlier Friday. San Jose also lost Brian Campbell as a free agent on Tuesday when Chicago signed him to an eight-year deal.
Sabres general manager Darcy Regier was in search of a reasonably priced veteran defenseman after trading Campbell to San Jose last spring and allowing three of last season's defensive regulars to become free agents.
